What to See

THE AMPHITHEATER

The Amphitheater (or  Arena) was built during the Roman imperia in 1st century for the purpose of gladiators fights. It was built outside the town walls along the Via Flavia, the road from Pula to Aquileia and Rome. The axes of the elliptical amphitheater are 132.45 and 105.10 m (434.5 and 344.8 ft) long, and the walls stand 32.45 m (106.5 ft) high. It could accommodate 23,000 spectators in the cavea.

Under arena there is small museum where you can see stone wheel which was used for production of olive oil and lots of amphora as well.

Today Arena is one of the famous tourist attraction and is uses as a concert place. The most famous world singers attended to arena like Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Andrea Boceli, Leonard Cohen, Jamiroquai, Sting, Eros Ramazzotti, 2 Cellos, Massive Attack, Dimensions festival, Đorđe Balašević, Oliver Dragojević and many others.

 

OLD CITY

In Roman time city of Pula was surrounded by  by stone walls and today you  can find just a part of the wall like is Arch of Sergius (Golden gate), the gate of Hercules, and the Twin gate.  Inside the wall there is still Romans monuments: Temple of Augustus, City square,  Roman theater.

On the top of the hill there is a fort built in 16 century  by the Venice and today is used like a Maritime museum.

 

NATIONAL PARK BRIJUNI

The Brijuni Islands, located in the south of the western Istrian coast, has a total of 14 islands and islets, making it the best indented and largest group of islands on the Istrian area.  The largest of the islands is Veliki Brijun. There are numerous dinosaur footprints on Brijuni proving their existence on the island some 160 million years ago. They can be seen on four sites on Veli Brijun. Animal kingdom on the islands has been enriched by numerous imported species. Apart from the native species such as the rabbits or various birds, one can seen exotic and less exotic animals which have become accustomed to the climate including deer, llama, zebra or an elephant. Apart from fauna, the flora also plays an important role. Mediterranean climate with lots of sunshine and warmth and sufficient air humidity facilitated dense vegetation of native plants such as holm oak, strawberry tree and myrrh. They are supplemented by various types of pines, sequoia, eucaliptus and fir trees, not characteristic for the Brijuni islands. The most famous among the Brijuni flora is the Old Olive, one of the oldest on the Mediterranean. It still produces olives for making the olive oil even after 1600 years of its life.

 

AQUARIUM PULA

The Aquarium is situated within the 130-year-old fort “Verudela”, once part of the powerful defence complex “Fortress Pula” built during the rule of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The historical fort is nowadays inhabited by hundreds of fish species from the northern and the southern portions of the Adriatic and several tropical marine and fresh water species, as well as fish from Croatian lakes and rivers.

 

FORTS

The Punta Christo Fortress was built in the middle of the 19th century on the peninsula of the same name near Štinjan, at the entrance to the Bay of Pula. It was the largest and strongest coastal fortress of the imperial and royal fortress artillery of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, and the position of the fortress, at 45 meters above sea level.

The fortress covers more than ten thousand square meters. It is separated by a deep defensive moat through which three entrances lead, in the interior there are three courtyards from which it is possible to enter the underground rooms of this fascinating building.

Thanks to a group of enthusiasts, this abandoned and neglected fortress has been cleaned and decorated for years, and during the summer it hosts numerous social, cultural and entertainment programs, concerts, festivals, exhibitions, programs for children and youth, workshops, performances…
